IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!
CORVID SHOOTING
It’s that time of year when we begin our regular corvid shoots on some of Suffolks largest open ground pig units. We have several days set aside each week through late May, June and into July when the birds are about in huge numbers.
Shooting mainly takes place on or around our local ‘free range’ piggeries as that’s where the largest concentrations of these birds are; mopping up the feed intended for the pigs. Depending on the weather we might start early in the morning and finish around 11.30/12.00 and then go for a late breakfast (which is included in the price). Sometimes if the birds are really keen (which at this time of year they are as they have plenty of hungry mouths to feed) we might shoot again in the afternoon or even start later and run on through the day. We may have up to 8 Guns on any given day located around the area in semi-permanent ‘sentry box’ hides with large decoy patterns set up.
Corvid shooting is all about opportunities, even more so than pigeons they are wild and canny birds and as such they do not perform to order and even when they do, they are not easily caught out. Patience is required and fieldcraft comes into its own if you want to bag good numbers. Don’t ask how many birds or cartridges you’ll shoot as it’s totally unknowable and depends on many things not least the bird’s habits and your own abilities but large numbers can sometimes be shot on these days.
